Fat Snapper

bed count: 37

So it was touch and go with the weather, but in the end I did manage to take Alec on his surprise fishing trip for his birthday yesterday.

We went over to Waiheke on Saturday and spent the night at Onetangi youth hostel before heading out on the Sunday. There was a point at which Alec might have had to strip down to his boxers and help Mark launch the boat, but he was saved from that fate by a local.

A mixed afternoon's weather, but Mark had warned us about that. In the sun, on calm water it was great, but there were a few cold showers and a few lumps in the water, especially at the end.

Mark kept apologising about the poor show of fish, but we were quite happy. I managed to hook 5 snapper (2 thrown back as they were too little), 1 yellow tail, 1 mackrel (or a 'slimy' over here), and a Kahawai (well 2, if you count the one that got away - it was THIS big!). Alec had a similarly good catch and all were very tasty for tea last night.

Got back here late and knackered and my arms hurt today from reeling the fish in, but we had a great time.

Just one more day left at work here and then we head up to Paihia at the end of the week. Lots of good fishing up there I'm told!
