Trams, punts and the Trans-Apline
So, after a lovely few days in Akaroa (which turned out to be the coldest part of the country whilst we were there) we headed for sunny Christchurch. Alec and I took the very scenic summit road via Lyttleton and Sumner whilst Larry and Lesley took the bus rather than sit on the roof of our rather full car.
We got spectacular views from the summit road, with the Canterbury Plains stretching out in one direction and mountains and harbours in the other. Since it was valantines day we treated ourselves to a valentines lunch on the beach at Sumner where we basked in the sun.
Christchurch is a lovely city and I can see why Fiona has chosen to live there. We did the usual tourist things - went for a punt on the river Avon, rode the trams, looked at the shops. Larry and Lesley also visited the Botanical Gardens whilst we sunned ourselves in Sumner and were very impressed. All very pleasant.
The house we stayed in was lovely - a modernised colonial style house with exposed brickwork on the chimneys and a big garden. We also managed to meet up with Matt and Trace again, along with Matt's folks who are also visiting - visiting your travelling offspring is all the rage you see.
We had a little treat in store for Larry and Lesley too. They were wondering what we were up to when we took them to an obscure part of the city centre. However, all became clear when they saw the 3 bronze corgi statues on the pavement.
We only managed a short stop in Christchurch before Alec put his folks on the Trans-Apline train to Greymouth where they picked up their hire car. We took the scenic road route, which pretty much runs alongside the train tracks and doesn't go through a really long tunnel, and met up in Hokitika. Plenty of gorgeous scenery on the way, and a few mad kiwi drivers, but this is now the norm.
