Singapore Zoo / Melaka
bed count: 6
Last day in Singapore yesterday. We saved the best til last I think and took a trip to the zoo.
Fantastic. Loads of animals kept in what appear to be good conditions (in open spaces ringed in with moats and fences rather than cages). Lions, tigers, baboons, etc. Even got to feed the Manatee by hand. Very bristly whiskers which really tickle.
It's a hell of a long way to come to a zoo I know, but if you're ever out this way it's worth a visit. Pictures coming soon.
We also managed a trip to Sentosa, which was good. One of the most interesting things was the taxi ride back to the apartment though. Very interesting taxi driver who was telling us all the reasons why Singapore is not a democracy. He was saying a lot of Singaporeans are very unhappy about the political situation.
In Malaysia now though. Saw an immediate change with lots of open countryside and plants which are allowed to grow and spread pretty naturally in comparison to Singapore.
Staying at the Traveller's Lodge in Melaka, about 2 hours south of KL. Only just checked in but seems like a nice hostel. Lovely roof garden and 'japanese style' reading area. Was a bit worried about the 48RM price tag until Alec pointed out that was only 7 GBP... or about the same price as a pint in Singapore... ;)
Getting a bit jittery about striking out on our own, but Alec is being very manly and protective. Going to sit down over the next few days and have a think about our plans. Would like to see some countryside and a beach up close at some point soon.
